What is Bamboo Flooring?

Bamboo floors are made from a type of grass (bamboo), and yet are harder and more durable than timber floors. Bamboo has an elegant natural beauty and superior durability, making this style of flooring an increasingly popular choice amongst Sydney home owners. Bamboo grows in abundance and faster than their tree counterparts, enabling it to become a more affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional timber floors.

Types of Bamboo Flooring

Bamboo floors are made through a process of shredding the bamboo, and pressed together with high temperatures and glue. There are several types of bamboo floor structures:

  • Strandwoven Bamboo Flooring – mixes the grass in an interlocked manner, making it the strongest and more expensive choice of bamboo flooring.
  • Horizontal Bamboo Flooring – refer to the bamboo being glued together horizontally and they exhibit a wider grain pattern.
  • Vertical Bamboo Flooring – refer to the bamboo being glued together vertically, leading to a more narrow grain pattern.

Are bamboo floors good?

Bamboo flooring is great in many ways - it’s a more affordable and durable alternative to timber flooring. It’s harder to scratch on the surface, is stronger as a floorboard and has the elegant natural look of bamboo. The main drawback of bamboo flooring is that it doesn’t go well with water - so you must be careful in high moisture areas of the home!

Is bamboo flooring waterproof?

No, like many other floorboards, bamboo flooring is not waterproof. Many bamboo floors have some level of water-resistance because they have a wax seal, helping keep water out. However, care must be taken to wipe up spills immediately.

What is a floating floor and why is bamboo flooring a floating floor?

Floating floors are flooring that can be installed on top of a subfloor without nails or glue. This makes floating timber floors suitable for apartments and units and reduces the time and cost of installation. Bamboo flooring is a floating floor and a way of getting natural  flooring into your apartment.

Bamboo flooring price? How much does bamboo flooring supply and installation cost?

In Australia, bamboo flooring supply-only tends to be between $45 - $60 /sqm. Installation tends to float between $20 - $35 /sqm. This makes the price of bamboo flooring lower than most solid timber and engineered flooring, but more expensive than laminate or hybrid flooring.
