Carpets for commercial venues have different requirements to residential homes. For commercial spaces with higher traffic and harsher footwear, we must first consider durability and maintenance.

There are two main categories of commercial carpets:

Broadloom (Roll) Carpets – the most popular type, which appears seamless and similar to your residential counterparts. Broadloom carpets that are suitable for commercial venues tend to be nylon or polypropylene, with nylon being the best option and polypropylene being the the most cost effective.
Carpet Tiles – are modular carpets made into squares that can be glued to the subfloor. They’re more customisable and easier to change or repair, whereby you can remove individual carpet tiles, rather than pull up the entire space. Most carpet tiles are made from the more durable fibre, nylon.

Overall, commercial carpet is cheaper per square meter compared to residential carpet. This is due to the fact that cheaper fibers are usually used in production.

Commercial grade carpets refer to carpet products which are specially designed to withstand heavy foot traffic and more spills compared to residential environments. Commercially rated carpets generally have a lower pile which makes them thinner than carpets you’d find at home.

The major difference between these two lies in the balance struck between durability and comfort. Commercial carpet is made thinner, making them less comfortable but more durable and easier to clean. On the other hand, residential carpet is designed with more comfort in mind. However, they will not be able to stand up to as much foot traffic.

Fibers used to make commercial grade carpets usually include nylon, polypropylene and olefin. This is due to their excellent durability as well as easy cleaning. These fibers are also synthetic, which makes them generally cheaper than natural fibers.

The lifespan of commercial carpeting is heavily dependent on proper maintenance, due to the heavy foot traffic and spills that these carpets endure on a daily basis. With proper care such as daily vacuuming, these carpets can last up to 15 years.
